Eliphalet Remington II (1793–1861) was a pivotal American inventor and industrialist who founded what would become one of the world’s most renowned firearm manufacturers. Born in Suffield, Connecticut, and raised in central New York, Remington spent his childhood working in his father’s smithy. According to popular legend, his career began in 1816 when he yearned for a high-quality rifle but couldn’t afford to purchase one. Instead, he forged his own barrel from scrap iron. After a local gunsmith completed the weapon, its exceptional performance at a shooting match garnered immediate orders from neighbors, effectively launching the family’s commercial gun-making venture.
As the business expanded, Remington strategically relocated operations to Ilion, New York, positioning his factory along the newly constructed Erie Canal. He was an early pioneer of mass production, transitioning the company from handcrafted custom pieces to standardized, interchangeable parts. Under his visionary leadership, the firm secured substantial government contracts and diversified into agricultural tools. Although he passed away at the onset of the American Civil War, his sons—Philo, Samuel, and Eliphalet III—continued his legacy, expanding the brand into the iconic Remington Arms Company and even pioneering the development of the first commercial typewriter.
