1 Disney Dollar with envelope. Colorful!

Disney Dollars, a unique form of corporate scrip issued by The Walt Disney Company from May 5, 1987, until their discontinuation in May 2016, resembled U.S. currency. These bills featured beloved Disney characters like Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Donald Duck and were valid for the purchase of goods and services at Disney theme parks, resorts, and stores at a one-to-one exchange rate with the U.S. dollar. Each note was signed by “treasurer” Scrooge McDuck and included advanced anti-counterfeiting measures such as microprinting, reflective ink, and unique serial numbers, making them a legitimate form of internal tender.

Although production has ceased, existing Disney Dollars technically remain valid legal tender within Disney properties. However, the rise of gift cards and digital payment methods, which led to their discontinuation, has made them a highly sought-after collectible item for most guests today rather than a practical payment method. The limited supply and varied designs, especially rare denominations like the $50 bill issued for Disneyland’s 50th Anniversary, have resulted in many notes now being worth significantly more to collectors than their original face value.
