Peter Colt (1744–1824), a prominent American industrialist, financier, and public official, played a pivotal role in Connecticut’s economic and political development during the post-Revolutionary era. Born into a family with deep New England roots, Colt served as a paymaster for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. After the war, he rose to prominence as a businessman, co-founding a textile mill in Hartford. This mill supplied the “Congress brown” cloth used for suits worn by George Washington and other delegates at the first presidential inauguration in 1789.

Colt’s career in public service was marked by his expertise in finance and infrastructure. He served as the Treasurer of Connecticut from 1790 to 1794 and later became the manager of the first cotton mill in Paterson, New Jersey. In Paterson, he implemented crucial waterpower systems, utilizing a reservoir system to power local factories. Throughout his career, Colt served as a key advisor and investor. He was a delegate to the state ratifying convention for the U.S. Constitution and later managed the Western Inland Lock Navigation Company in New York. Colt passed away in Paterson on March 17, 1824, leaving behind a legacy as a dedicated public servant and businessman. Notably, he is the grandfather of the renowned firearms manufacturer, Samuel Colt.
