The American Revolutionary War, which lasted from April 19, 1775, to September 3, 1783, is also referred to as the Revolutionary War or the American War of Independence. It was initiated by representatives from thirteen American colonies in Congress against Great Britain, primarily over the quest for independence from the British Empire. The conflict unfolded across North America, the Caribbean Sea, and the surrounding waters of England, including the North Sea, the Irish Sea, and the English Channel. Colonial discontent was fueled by the Stamp Act and Townshend Acts, leading to significant events such as the Boston Massacre in 1770 and the Boston Tea Party in 1773. In response to the Boston Tea Party, Parliament enacted punitive measures known as the 'Intolerable Acts' in the spring of 1774, prompting twelve colonies to convene the First Continental Congress from September 5 to October 26, 1774, to draft a petition to the King and organize a boycott of British goods. Hostilities commenced on April 19, 1775, when the British army in Boston faced resistance from the Massachusetts militia at Lexington and Concord after the destruction of colonial powder stores. In June, the Second Continental Congress appointed George Washington to establish a Continental Army and lead the effort to capture Boston, which occurred from April 19, 1775, to March 17, 1776. The Patriots also sent the Olive Branch Petition to the King and Parliament on July 8, 1775, but it was rejected. Subsequently, they attempted to invade British Quebec but were unsuccessful. In July 1776, Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence.
