American Express Company (Amex) is a bank holding company based in the United States and a multinational corporation specializing in financial services, particularly payment cards. Its headquarters is located at 200 Vesey Street, also referred to as American Express Tower, in the Battery Park City area of Lower Manhattan. Amex ranks as the fourth-largest card network in the world by purchase volume, following China UnionPay, Visa, and Mastercard. As of December 31, 2023, there were 141.2 million Amex cards in circulation globally, with an average annual expenditure per cardholder amounting to US$24,059. That year, Amex processed over $1.7 trillion in purchase volume through its network. It stands as one of the largest banks in the United States, holding the 77th position on the Fortune 500 list and the 28th position on Forbes' list of the most valuable brands.

In 2023, it was ranked 63rd in the Forbes Global 2000. Additionally, Amex operates a direct banking service. Established in 1850 as a freight forwarding enterprise, Amex began offering financial and travel services in the early 20th century. It launched its first paper charge card in 1958, followed by the introduction of the gold card in 1966, the green card in 1969, the platinum card in 1984, and the Centurion Card in 1999. The advertising campaign "Don't Leave Home Without It" was first launched in 1975 and refreshed in 2005. During the 1980s, Amex acquired a stake in Shearson, which it later divested. In the 1990s, the company ceased the practice of lowering interchange fees for merchants that exclusively accepted Amex cards and increased its market share through focused marketing strategies. Amex transitioned to a bank holding company amid the financial crisis of 2007–2008. In 2013, Amex began operating airport lounges, providing access to select cardholders.
