The Bermudian dollar (BMD), the official currency of Bermuda, has been in circulation since replacing the pound in February 1970. It’s pegged to the U.S. dollar, which is also legal tender on the island. This economic alignment, maintained by the Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA), stabilizes Bermuda’s primary industries: international financial services and tourism. Visitors and businesses often use the currencies interchangeably, though the BMD isn’t traded outside the island.

Managed by the BMA, Bermudian currency features vibrant and secure designs celebrating the island’s natural heritage. Current banknotes ($2-$100) include local landmarks and wildlife like the Bermuda bluebird and cardinal. In late 2025, the BMA introduced polymer banknotes ($2-$5) with updated security measures and King Charles III’s portrait. These modern vertical notes are the standard, while older horizontal series were withdrawn in 2014 but remain exchangeable for ten years.
