The Marconi Company, a British telecommunications and engineering company, operated under that name from 1963 to 1987. Its origins can be traced back to the Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company, founded by Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi in 1897. Over time, the company underwent several name changes due to mergers and acquisitions.
Marconi Company was a pioneer in wireless long-distance communication and mass media broadcasting. It eventually became one of the UK’s most successful manufacturing companies. In 1999, its defense equipment manufacturing division, Marconi Electronic Systems, merged with British Aerospace (BAe) to form BAE Systems. However, financial difficulties led to the collapse of the remaining company in 2006, resulting in the acquisition of its business by the Swedish telecommunications company, Ericsson.
