The petroleum industry in Ohio has a rich history, dating back to 1859. Since then, Ohio has consistently produced substantial quantities of oil and gas. Notably, the state has produced over 1 billion barrels of oil and 9 trillion cubic feet of natural gas since 1860. The discovery of unconventional resources, particularly in eastern Ohio, is expected to further boost Ohio’s oil and gas production. The journey began in late 1859 when blacksmith William Jeffrey drilled the first well in Ohio specifically designed to produce petroleum. This pioneering well is situated in Mecca Township, Trumbull County, northeast of Warren. In 1860, similar activities took place in Macksburg.
