John Simpson Africa, a Representative from Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, was born on September 15, 1832, in Huntingdon, Huntingdon County.
Simpson’s career spanned various roles, including engineer for the Huntingdon & Broad Top Mountain Railroad, surveyor for Huntingdon County (1853-1854), owner and editor of Standing Stone (1853-1855), and city councilor in Huntingdon.
He served as a journalist clerk for the Pennsylvania State Senate (1858-1859) and was elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1860 term. However, Simpson declined to seek reelection in the 1861 term.
Subsequently, Simpson held positions as deputy secretary for the Pennsylvania Department of Internal Affairs (1873-1879), chief burgess in Huntingdon, supervisor of the 7th Pennsylvania District during the United States Census (1880), cashier at the First National Bank (1880-1883), Secretary of Internal Affairs for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (1883-1887), president of the Union Trust Company of Philadelphia (1887-1897), director of the First National Bank of Huntingdon, and director of the Fidelity Mutual Life Association of Philadelphia.
Simpson passed away on August 8, 1900, in Huntingdon, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, and was interred at Riverview Cemetery in Huntingdon, Huntingdon County.
