The company, formerly known as Amerada Hess Corporation, has undergone a transformation and is now known as the Hess Corporation. This American global independent energy company is involved in the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas. The company’s roots can be traced back to the merger of Hess Oil and Chemical and Amerada Petroleum in 1968. Leon Hess held the position of CEO from the early 1960s until 1995, after which his son John B. Hess succeeded him as both chairman and CEO. Headquartered in New York City, the company ranked 394th in the 2016 annual ranking of Fortune 500 corporations. In 2020, Forbes Global 2000 ranked Hess as the 1,253rd largest public company globally. The company operates exploration and production operations onshore in the United States, particularly in North Dakota, and in Libya. Additionally, it has offshore operations in the United States, specifically in the Gulf of Mexico, Canada, South America, in Guyana and Suriname, and Southeast Asia, in Malaysia and the Joint Development Area of Malaysia and Thailand.
