The St. Cloud, Grantsburg, and Ashland Railroad Company, incorporated in 1878, aimed to connect central Minnesota to the strategic port of Ashland, Wisconsin, on Lake Superior. Although its name implied a vast regional reach, its primary accomplishment was constructing a 12-mile spur line between Rush City, Minnesota, and Grantsburg, Wisconsin. This short but crucial stretch of track was completed in 1884, providing the remote community of Grantsburg with its first reliable connection to the outside world and the broader commerce of the Twin Cities.
However, the railroad’s independence was short-lived, reflecting the era’s trend of rapid consolidation. Shortly after its completion, the line was leased to the St. Paul and Duluth Railroad, which sought to control feeder routes into its main network. By 1899, the St. Cloud, Grantsburg, and Ashland Railroad was formally absorbed into the St. Paul and Duluth Railroad, which was subsequently acquired by the Northern Pacific Railway just a year later. Although it never reached its namesake destinations of St. Cloud or Ashland, the “Grantsburg branch” remained a functional part of the Northern Pacific system for decades. It served local timber and agricultural interests until the decline of rural rail traffic led to its eventual abandonment.
A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
