André Roman, born on March 5, 1795, and passing away on January 26, 1866, was an American planter and politician who held significant positions in Louisiana’s government. A member of the Whig Party, Roman’s political career spanned various roles, including state representative, Speaker of the House twice, Parish judge, and Governor of Louisiana.
Roman’s journey began in 1818 when he was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives at the tender age of 23. His remarkable achievements continued in 1822 when he was elected Speaker of the House, a position he held until 1826. However, his contributions extended beyond the House. In 1828, he was elected as a Judge in St. James Parish and later, in 1828, he was elected to the State House.
Roman’s political acumen was further tested during the constitutional crisis that followed the unexpected death of Governor Pierre Derbigny in 1828. In the absence of a clear successor, then-State Senate President Arnaud Beauvais was appointed as acting Governor. However, Beauvais resigned several months later, leaving the state legislature with no choice but to call for a special gubernatorial election. This election was set for July 1830, and Roman was chosen to serve as the new Governor of Louisiana.
