Cecil Blount DeMille (August 12, 1881 – January 21, 1959) was a prominent American film director and producer, known for his work in both silent and sound cinema. DeMille's career commenced in 1900 as a stage actor, after which he transitioned to writing and directing theatrical productions. He made his directorial debut with the film The Squaw Man in 1914 and subsequently directed numerous silent films before embracing the sound era in 1929. He gained fame for the extravagant style and theatricality of his films. Some of his most notable works include Cleopatra (1934), Samson and Delilah (1949), The Greatest Show on Earth (1952)—which earned the Academy Award for Best Picture—and The Ten Commandments (1956), his final and most commercially successful film. In addition to winning an Academy Award, DeMille received an Academy Honorary Award for his contributions to cinema, the Palme d'Or, a Directors Guild of America Award for Lifetime Achievement, and the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award.
He was also the inaugural recipient of the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award, named in his honor. In 1902, he married Constance Adams DeMille, with whom he had four children. Born in Ashfield, Massachusetts, while his parents were on vacation, DeMille was raised in Washington, North Carolina. The family later resided in Wayne, New Jersey, in a house constructed by Henry DeMille. They frequently spent time in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, where they operated a private school and attended Christ Episcopal Church. DeMille credited his inspiration for The Ten Commandments to his experiences at that church. At the age of 15, he enrolled in Pennsylvania Military College in Chester, Pennsylvania. Both he (Class of 1900) and his brother William (Class of 1901) attended and graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts on scholarship, with the Academy later recognizing DeMille with an Alumni Achievement Award.
A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
