Emanuel Lehman (1827-1907), born Mendel Lehmann on February 15, 1827, in Rimpar, Bavaria, was an American banker. He was the younger brother of Henry Lehman and the older brother of Mayer Lehman, and together they co-founded Lehman Brothers.
Lehman was the son of Eva (Rosenheim) and Abraham Lehmann, a cattle merchant. In 1847, he traveled to the United States to join his brother Henry in business.
In May 1859, Lehman married Pauline Sondheim, the daughter of Louis Sondheim of New York. They had four children: Milton Lehman, Philip Lehman (a partner in the firm), Harriet Philip Lehman, and Evelyn Philip Lehman. Tragically, Pauline passed away in 1871.
Lehman’s contributions extended beyond his business endeavors. In 1897, he generously donated $100,000 (equivalent to $3.9 million in 2025) to the Hebrew Orphan Asylum of New York, with the stipulation that it would be used to expand and sustain its valuable services. Lehman’s legacy is remembered for his significant role in the banking industry and his philanthropic efforts. He passed away on January 10, 1907, in New York City at the age of 79.
