Norddeutscher Lloyd (NDL) was a prominent German shipping company founded in Bremen in 1857. Operating out of Bremen and Bremerhaven, it grew to become one of the world's most important shipping lines in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. NDL was particularly dominant in transatlantic travel, carrying more immigrants to New York than any other company at the time. The company was known for its fast, luxurious ocean liners, which were at the forefront of naval engineering. Notable ships like the four-funneled Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse and the speedy post-WWI liners Bremen and Europa competed fiercely for the prestigious Blue Riband for the fastest Atlantic crossing. The company's expansion and success were critical to the economic development of its home cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven.

NDL faced significant challenges and was forced to rebuild almost from scratch after both World War I and World War II, having its fleet confiscated by the Allies on both occasions. Despite these setbacks, the company demonstrated a remarkable resilience. It diversified its operations, getting involved in air transport for a time and later shifting its focus to container shipping as passenger travel moved toward airliners. After decades of intense competition and, later, close association with its rival, the Hamburg America Line (HAPAG), the two companies officially merged in 1970. The resulting entity, Hapag-Lloyd, continues to operate today as a major container shipping company, carrying forward a part of NDL's legacy.

A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
