The Preston Coal and Iron Company, incorporated by the Virginia General Assembly on March 1, 1856, emerged during a period of intense industrial speculation in the Appalachian region. Founded by a group of investors, including figures like William M. Peyton and William J. Clark, the company was granted the authority to operate in the counties of Preston, Monongalia, and Taylor (later becoming West Virginia). With a substantial capital stock limit for its time, the enterprise was designed to capitalize on the region’s abundant Upper Freeport coal seams and iron ore deposits. Its goal was to establish a massive mining and manufacturing hub, fueled by the expansion of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.

Despite its ambitious charter, the company’s journey was significantly impacted by the volatile economic and political climate of the late 1850s. While it contributed to the early industrial mapping of the Cheat River valley, the onset of the Civil War and the subsequent division of Virginia severely disrupted large-scale corporate ventures in the area. The Preston Coal and Iron Company stands as a notable example of the mid-19th-century “coal boom” in the Alleghenies. It represents the transition from small-scale local smithing to the corporate-led extraction efforts that would eventually define the West Virginia economy after statehood.

A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
