The Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad was the inaugural railway to traverse Missouri, commencing in Hannibal in the northeast and extending to St. Joseph in the northwest. It is noted for transporting the first letter for the Pony Express on April 3, 1860, via a train powered by the locomotive named Missouri. This railway linked the second and third largest cities in Missouri before the onset of the American Civil War. The stagecoach route it followed was formerly known as the 'Hound Dog Trail'. Construction of the railroad, initiated during a meeting in 1846 at the Hannibal office of John Marshall Clemens, the father of Mark Twain, began in 1851 from both ends. Funding for the construction was secured through bonds from counties along the route and a congressional donation of 600,000 acres (2,400 km²) of land. The two lines converged in Chillicothe, Missouri, on February 13, 1859. A marker placed by the railroad at this location was uncovered in 2009 at the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railroad Museum in Galesburg, Illinois.

A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
