The Atlanta and Charlotte Air Line Railway emerged from the 1877 reorganization of the Atlanta and Richmond Air Line Railway. Later, in 1894, it became part of the Southern Railway. Finally, it merged into the Norfolk Southern Railway in 1996.

Currently, the line is used by Amtrak’s Crescent service, formerly known as the Southern Crescent. In Duluth, Georgia, it is served by the Southeastern Railway Museum.

Organized in 1870, the Atlanta and Richmond Air–Line Railway combined the Georgia Air Line Railroad and the Air Line Railroad in South Carolina under the leadership of President Algernon S. Buford. The line was completed by 1873 but went bankrupt the following year when it was reorganized into the Atlanta and Charlotte Air Line Railway. It later became part of the Southern Railway.

The Southern Railway, formerly known as the Southern Railway Company and now known as the Norfolk Southern Railway, was a class 1 railroad based in the Southern United States from 1894 to 1982. It merged with the Norfolk & Western to form Norfolk Southern in 1982. The railroad was the result of nearly 150 predecessor lines that were combined, reorganized, and recombined starting in the 1830s. It formally became the Southern Railway in 1894.
