The Utica and Black River Railroad (U&BR), originally incorporated as the Black River and Utica Railroad on January 31, 1853, played a crucial role in North Country transportation. Construction commenced in August 1853 and reached Boonville by 1855. However, the company soon encountered financial difficulties and underwent reorganization under the U&BR name after a foreclosure sale in 1860. Despite these challenges, the railroad successfully expanded northward in stages, reaching Lyons Falls in 1867, Lowville in 1868, and eventually Ogdensburg by 1878. This expansion transformed Utica into a vital transfer point for tourists heading to destinations like Trenton Falls.

By the late 19th century, the railroad became a prime target for larger systems aiming to consolidate New York’s rail traffic. It was leased to the Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg Railroad (RW&O) and eventually fully absorbed into the massive New York Central and Hudson River Railroad system in 1913. While much of the original infrastructure has undergone changes, parts of the historic route continue to be utilized by freight operators such as the Mohawk, Adirondack & Northern and tourist services like the Adirondack Railroad. Notably, the historic Union Station in Utica still serves as a departure point for these tourist services.

A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
