The Pittsburgh, McKeesport, and Greensburg Railway (PM&G), established in 1901 through the merger of several smaller lines, played a crucial role as an interurban trolley system in Southwestern Pennsylvania. It served as a vital transit link, connecting the industrial hub of McKeesport with the county seat of Greensburg. By 1906, the West Penn Railways system acquired the line, integrating it into a vast network that enabled passengers to traverse the Turtle Creek Valley and reach the heart of Westmoreland County. At its peak, the PM&G transported thousands of workers and shoppers daily, fueling the growth of “streetcar suburbs” and offering a dependable alternative to steam railroads.
Despite its initial success, the railway encountered increasing challenges as the 20th century progressed. The rise of affordable automobiles and the improvement of paved roads in the 1920s began to diminish its ridership. The Great Depression further strained the company’s finances, making it increasingly difficult to maintain the aging tracks and rolling stock. In 1952, West Penn Railways officially ceased its trolley operations, replacing the rail lines with bus routes. While most of the physical tracks have been removed, the legacy of the PM&G endures in the layout of local towns and the historical memories of the region’s industrial golden age.
A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
