The Norfolk and Western Railway (N&W) was a prominent Class I railroad in the United States, established through over 200 mergers from 1838 to 1982. For the majority of its operational history, its headquarters were located in Roanoke, Virginia. The railway adopted the motto "Precision Transportation" and was known by several nicknames, such as "King Coal" and "British Railway of America." During the Civil War, the N&W emerged as the largest railroad within the Confederacy, significantly contributing to the logistics of the war by transporting essential supplies.
Renowned for producing its own steam locomotives at the Roanoke Shops, the N&W also manufactured its own hopper cars. After 1960, it became the last major Class I railroad to utilize steam locomotives, with the final Y class 2-8-8-2s being retired between 1964 and 1965. In December 1959, the N&W merged with the Virginian Railway (reporting mark VGN), a historical competitor in the Pocahontas coal region. By 1970, further mergers with the Nickel Plate Road and Wabash resulted in a network that spanned 7,595 miles (12,223 km) of road across 14,881 miles (23,949 km) of track, extending from North Carolina to New York and from Virginia to Iowa.
