The Lehigh Valley Railroad (LV), often referred to as the “Route of the Black Diamond,” was established in 1846 primarily to transport anthracite coal from Pennsylvania’s mines to Eastern markets. Initially spearheaded by industrialist Asa Packer, the line initially connected Mauch Chunk (now Jim Thorpe) to Easton. Over the ensuing decades, it underwent significant expansion, extending its reach to New York City and Buffalo. By the late 19th century, the LVRR had transformed from a regional coal hauler into a premier high-speed link between the Great Lakes and the Atlantic seaboard, famously launching the Black Diamond Express passenger service in 1896.

The 20th century presented substantial challenges as the demand for anthracite coal declined and competition from trucking intensified. Despite its reputation for efficiency and well-maintained equipment, the railroad grappled with the decline of Northeast manufacturing and the heavy tax burdens of the era. These financial pressures ultimately led to a bankruptcy filing in 1970. In 1976, the Lehigh Valley’s remaining operations were absorbed into Conrail, a government-funded corporation aimed at revitalizing the struggling rail systems of the Northeast. While the company no longer exists, many of its historic corridors continue to serve as vital routes for modern freight carriers like Norfolk Southern.

A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
