Duquesne Gardens served as the principal sports venue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, throughout the early 20th century. Constructed in 1890, the facility initially functioned as a trolley barn before evolving into a versatile arena. It opened its doors three years after a devastating fire claimed the city's previous sports venue, the Schenley Park Casino, in 1896. Over time, Duquesne Gardens became the home ground for several of Pittsburgh's notable sports teams, including the ice hockey franchises Pittsburgh Pirates and Pittsburgh Hornets. The Western Pennsylvania Hockey League, recognized as the first ice hockey league to openly recruit and trade players, hosted all its matches at this arena. Notably, it was the first hockey rink to incorporate glass above the dasher boards, with Herculite glass, developed by the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company, being tested locally. Prior to this innovation, most rinks utilized wire mesh. Additionally, the Pittsburgh Ironmen, a founding member of the Basketball Association of America (the precursor to the National Basketball Association), played at Duquesne Gardens from 1946 to 1947.

Beyond team sports, the Duquesne Garden Ball Room, situated on the second floor, was among the largest dance halls in the nation during that era. Originally established in 1890 as the Duquesne Traction Company trolley barn in the Oakland neighborhood, the building underwent significant renovations in 1895 when Pittsburgh politician Christopher Lyman Magee invested nearly $500,000 (equivalent to $15.6 million in 2021) to acquire and refurbish it. He renamed the venue Duquesne Gardens in 1896, although it was commonly referred to as the "Arena" by local residents. With the world's largest indoor ice rink and a spacious ballroom on the second floor, the Gardens emerged as a premier indoor event space.

A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
