The Boston and Maine Railroad (B&M), established in 1833, initially aimed to connect Boston with Portland, Maine. Through a series of aggressive mergers and leases during the late 19th century, particularly the absorption of the Eastern Railroad and the Boston and Lowell, the B&M transformed into a formidable regional powerhouse. By the turn of the 20th century, it controlled an extensive network of tracks spanning Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, and New York. This extensive network served as the primary lifeline for New England’s industrial boom, transporting textiles, timber, and commuters.

However, the mid-20th century presented significant challenges. The rise of interstate highways and air travel gradually eroded the B&M’s dominance in both passenger and freight services. Despite pioneering innovations like the “Flying Yankee” streamlined diesel train, the company grappled with financial instability and ultimately declared bankruptcy in 1970. Fortunately, its legacy was preserved through a transition of assets. While much of its freight infrastructure was integrated into the Guilford Rail System (now Pan Am Railways) in 1983, its core passenger routes in the Greater Boston area laid the foundation for today’s MBTA Commuter Rail network.

A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
