This railway line was operational from 1886 until 1894, at which point it became part of the Jamestown and Lake Erie Railway, continuing its service from 1894 to 1898. It was then incorporated into the Jamestown and Chautauqua Railway, which operated from 1898 until 1913. In 1914, the line was taken over by the Jamestown, Westfield and Northwestern Railroad (JW&NW), an electric interurban railroad that linked the towns of Jamestown and Westfield in New York until 1950. Referred to as the "Chautauqua Lake Route," this single-track, 32-mile (51 km) electrified railway provided both passenger and freight transportation between the furniture manufacturing center of Jamestown and the Lake Erie community of Westfield. It connected with the New York Central Railroad at the Westfield depot, making the interchange of passengers and freight with the New York Central Railroad a vital aspect of JW&NW's operations, which reached its peak in the 1920s. However, with the rise of automobile travel, passenger numbers began to decline. Furthermore, the decrease in furniture production in Jamestown diminished the economic need for the JW&NW railroad, ultimately resulting in its abandonment in 1950.
