United States paper money, known as Federal Reserve notes, has been the uniform federal currency since the Civil War era. It evolved from a chaotic system of various bank-issued notes. The U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) is responsible for designing and producing this currency. It is printed on a durable blend of 75% cotton and 25% linen, embedded with tiny red and blue synthetic fibers.

American currency currently circulates in seven denominations: $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. All designs of U.S. currency issued since 1861 remain legal tender at their full face value.

To combat counterfeiting, modern U.S. banknotes (denominations $5 and higher) incorporate various sophisticated security features. These include watermarks (faint images visible when held to light), security threads that glow different colors under ultraviolet light, and color-shifting ink used in the numeral in the lower right corner. The redesigned $100 bill also features an advanced 3-D security ribbon woven into the paper, with images of bells and “100”s that move when tilted.

The average lifespan of a banknote varies significantly by denomination. For instance, the $1 bill lasts about 7.2 years, while the less frequently exchanged $100 bill can circulate for over 22 years.
