The roots of Shreveport’s history can be traced back to 1836, when the Shreve Town Company, a pioneering corporation, established the city at the confluence of the newly navigable Red River and the Texas Trail. This strategic location marked the beginning of Shreveport’s growth and development. Throughout the 20th century, Shreveport experienced remarkable expansion. However, its trajectory took a significant turn when oil was discovered in Louisiana, transforming the city into a national hub for the oil industry. Standard Oil of Louisiana and United Gas Corporation, prominent oil companies, established their headquarters in Shreveport, further solidifying its status as a major economic center.

Despite its thriving oil industry, Shreveport faced challenges in the latter half of the 20th century. The decline of the oil industry, the closure of General Motors’ Shreveport Operations, and various economic difficulties contributed to a decline in the city’s population, poverty, drug-related issues, and violent crime. Undeterred by these challenges, Shreveport embarked on a transformative journey to revitalize its infrastructure, diversify its economy, and address crime. The city implemented various initiatives to achieve these goals, including investing in public services, promoting job creation, and fostering community engagement.

Despite these efforts, Shreveport encountered a setback in 2021, when it witnessed the highest number of homicides in its recorded history. This grim milestone surpassed the previous record set in 1993, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced by the city in addressing crime and promoting public safety.
