Clear Creek County was established as one of the initial 17 counties by the Colorado legislature on November 1, 1861, and remains one of only two counties, alongside Gilpin, that has maintained its original boundaries without alteration. The county derives its name from Clear Creek, which flows from the continental divide through the area. Initially, Idaho Springs was appointed as the county seat; however, in 1867, the county government was relocated to Georgetown.
