St. Joseph Lead Company, founded on March 25, 1864, in New York City, initially acquired 946 acres in Bonne Terre, Missouri, to exploit local lead deposits. Despite facing challenges during the Civil War, the company prospered under J. Wyman Jones’s leadership. Jones introduced innovative diamond drilling techniques, making St. Joseph a dominant force in the “Old Lead Belt.” By 1943, after acquiring smaller competitors, St. Joe became the sole operator in the region, leading to the development of massive smelting operations in Josephtown, PA, and Herculaneum, MO. This solidified its position as the nation’s largest lead and zinc producer.

As the company’s original mines depleted in the 1940s and 1950s, it diversified by discovering new reserves in the “New Lead Belt” of Missouri and venturing into oil, coal, and iron-ore projects. In 1971, the company was renamed St. Joe Minerals Corporation and expanded into global markets, becoming a diversified natural resource firm. In 1981, it was acquired by Fluor Corporation and eventually merged into the Zinc Corporation of America in 1987. This marked the end of St. Joseph’s legacy as a significant player in American industrial mining history.

A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
