Kropp Forge derives its name from Charles A. Kropp, who immigrated to America from Sweden in the late 1880s. After gaining experience at a local forge shop, he, along with three partners, established a small flat die forge shop in Chicago in 1901. Before the onset of World War I, Charles Kropp became the sole proprietor of the business and subsequently relocated the company to its current site in Cicero, IL, in 1918. At that juncture, the plant primarily concentrated on manufacturing products for armaments. Over the years, the company's offerings expanded to encompass components for various industries, including Railroad, Oil, Agriculture, Automotive, Machine Tool, Marine, Construction, Power, Material Handling, and Aviation. The demands of World War II further escalated production for aircraft, ordnance, ships, military vehicles, and essential machinery. In the late 1970s, the Kropp Family divested the business, which changed ownership twice more during the 1980s before being acquired by TIC United Corp. in 1987. The company faced significant challenges in the late 1980s and early 1990s, grappling with labor issues and a general downturn in business that led to the closure of 25% of the forging industry. Despite these adversities, Kropp Forge has persevered and, since 1993, has experienced consistent growth in sales, employment, capital reinvestment, and, most crucially, customer satisfaction.
