The F. W. Woolworth Company, often known as Woolworth's or simply Woolworth, was a pioneering retail organization that laid the groundwork for modern retail practices through its five-and-dime store concept. Established by Frank Winfield Woolworth on February 22, 1879, in Utica, New York, the first store, "Woolworth's Great Five Cent Store," encountered early challenges. However, success followed with a later store in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, which facilitated the expansion of a vast retail network. With the assistance of his brother, Charles Sumner Woolworth, the company introduced various innovative strategies in merchandising, procurement, sales, and customer service that continue to be applicable today.

Woolworth's became a significant retail chain during the 20th century; however, it began to face a downturn due to increased competition starting in the 1980s. In July 1997, Woolworth discontinued its operations and shifted its focus to sporting goods, rebranding as the Venator Group. By 2001, the company had fully transitioned to the sporting goods industry and adopted the name Foot Locker, Inc., changing its stock ticker symbol to "FL" in 2003.

A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
