The May Department Stores Company, founded in 1877 by David May, was a prominent American holding company of department stores that operated numerous regional department store brands across the United States. Some of its well-known names included Lord & Taylor, Robinson's-May, Kaufmann's, Foley's, Filene's, Hecht's, and Marshall Field's, among others. May was known for operating these divisions with limited interconnectivity, maintaining their regional identities for decades. The company also ventured into real estate development, including shopping centers and malls, and expanded its portfolio through numerous acquisitions throughout its history.

However, the retail landscape changed significantly with the rise of discount stores and online shopping. In 2005, Federated Department Stores, now known as Macy's, Inc., acquired May in a major retail transaction. This acquisition led to the conversion of most May-owned stores to the Macy's and Bloomingdale's names, except for the Lord & Taylor chain, which was later sold off. The merger resulted in a significant consolidation within the department store industry, but also contributed to changes in the retail landscape and faced some criticism for replacing local brand heritage.

A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
