Iowa State Prohibitory Amendment Association - 1880's circa Partially Unissued Stock Certificate -

Inv# GS2134   Stock
State(s): Iowa
Years: 188-

Unissued Stock. In 1882 the people of Iowa had submitted to the state the question of making it illegal to make, sell, or keep for sale any intoxicating liquor, including ale, wine, and beer. It was proposed to make this prohibitory measure a part of the constitution. It was carried in the state by nearly 30,000 majority, but became a dead letter by reason of the gross neglect of an enrolling clerk; but the following assembly enacted a statutory law prohibiting the sale of all liquors contemplated in the amendment voted upon. In 1888 it was tried again and failed. A very important political stock! Signed by the President and Secretary. Excellent Condition! Rare!

Cordelia Throop Cole (née, Throop; November 17, 1833 – April 29, 1900) was a 19th-century American social reformer, who lectured, wrote, and edited on behalf the temperance crusade and social purity movement. An important part of her work at this time was the development of the post office mission, which became a firmly-established branch of Unitarian work. She was often called to fill vacancies in the pulpit of the denomination, and on two occasions gave the charge at ordination services. In 1885, she was made state superintendent of the Iowa WCTU department of the "White Shield and the White Cross." In this work, she attended conferences, formed religious clubs, and road many miles to meet an appointment, sometimes holding three or four meetings at different locations within twenty-four hours. Cole delivered hundreds of addresses in Iowa and other states. She was at one time assistant to Frances Willard, but in 1889, on the division among the workers, growing out of the political affiliations of the large body, she resigned. After the Non-Partisan National Woman's Christian Temperance Union organized, she accepted the position of national superintendent, still maintaining her allegiance to the Iowa work. In 1896, she was general secretary of the Iowa Prohibitory Amendment League, a state body which had its headquarters at Mount Pleasant. A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
