Adelphia Communications Corporation, founded in 1952 by John Rigas in Coudersport, Pennsylvania, began as a modest local cable television provider. Over the ensuing decades, Rigas and his family aggressively expanded the company by acquiring smaller cable systems across the United States. By the late 1990s, Adelphia had grown into the fifth-largest cable television company in the nation, serving over five million subscribers in more than 30 states. This growth was symbolized by the company’s relocation of its corporate headquarters to Buffalo, New York, marking its transformation from a rural operation to a significant player in the American telecommunications industry.
However, the company’s rapid ascent came to a dramatic halt in 2002 when a massive financial scandal was uncovered. Federal investigators revealed that the Rigas family had employed billions of dollars in off-balance-sheet loans to fund personal indulgences, acquire professional sports teams, and artificially inflate Adelphia’s subscriber numbers and earnings. This systemic corporate fraud led to Adelphia filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June 2002, marking one of the largest corporate failures in U.S. history at the time. Consequently, John Rigas and his son Timothy were subsequently convicted of bank fraud, securities fraud, and conspiracy. In 2006, the company’s remaining valuable assets were sold to Time Warner Cable and Comcast for approximately $17 billion.
A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
