Milton S. Hershey, driven by his determination to bring milk chocolate, once a Swiss luxury, to the American masses, founded the Hershey Chocolate Company. After achieving success in the caramel business, he sold his first company for $1 million in 1900 to dedicate himself solely to chocolate production. In the dairy-rich farmland of Derry Church, Pennsylvania, he constructed a massive, technologically advanced factory. By 1905, he had perfected the “Hershey Process,” a method involving fresh milk that imparted a distinct tangy flavor to his bars and ensured a stable shelf life suitable for national distribution.

Beyond its candy bars, the corporation is renowned for its unique philanthropic legacy. During the Great Depression, Hershey employed the entire town of Hershey, Pennsylvania, through extensive construction projects. In 1909, he established the Milton Hershey School for orphaned children, which eventually became the majority owner of the company’s voting stock. Consequently, a substantial portion of the profits from every Hershey bar continues to fund the education and care of thousands of students today. Over the decades, the brand expanded through strategic acquisitions such as Reese’s and Kit Kat, transforming from a local creamery into a global confectionery giant.

A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
