William Mace Hickey, a long-serving executive and board chairman of the United Corporation, a prominent securities investment company, began his career in 1927 with an engineering degree from Harvard. He soon transitioned into the finance and utility sector. In 1934, he served as an examiner for the Public Utility Division of the Securities and Exchange Commission before joining United Corporation. There, he rose to become president in 1943 and continued to lead the company until 1976. Later, he served as chairman of the board, overseeing its eventual rebranding as Baldwin-United.
Hickey’s distinguished career was also marked by international recognition and board memberships. He received honors from both the Venezuelan and Spanish governments, with Spain awarding him the Grand Cross and Order of Civil Merit. He was an active member of the Spanish Institute and the Council on Foreign Relations and was also a Knight of Malta. Hickey passed away in 1983 at the age of 76, leaving behind a legacy as a respected leader in the financial and foreign relations fields.
