Tractor Supply Co., founded in 1938 by Charles E. Schmidt Sr., initially operated as a mail-order tractor parts business based in Chicago, Illinois. Its mission was to provide affordable and essential repair parts to farmers during the Great Depression. The company’s innovative concept quickly gained traction, leading to rapid expansion into a retail operation. In 1939, Tractor Supply opened its first brick-and-mortar store in Minot, North Dakota. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, the chain expanded across the American heartland, transforming from a niche supplier into a trusted retailer catering to traditional farmers and ranchers.

Despite being acquired by larger entities in the 1960s and 1970s, a 1982 management-led leveraged buyout allowed Tractor Supply to refocus on its core, rural, and farm-store niche. In the subsequent decades, particularly after its 1994 return to the NASDAQ, the company evolved to serve a broader “rural lifestyle” demographic. This included hobby farmers, suburban homeowners, and pet owners. Tractor Supply shifted its product offerings from purely agricultural tools to a vast array of products for home, land, pet, and animal care.

Headquartered in Brentwood, Tennessee, since the 2000s, Tractor Supply has grown into the largest rural lifestyle retailer in the United States. Today, with thousands of stores across 49 states, the company continues to thrive by focusing on the specialized needs of the “out here” lifestyle. Tractor Supply’s legacy as a cornerstone of rural America is firmly established.
