David Charles Novak, born on October 30, 1952, is an American businessman, author, and philanthropist. He is the founder and CEO of David Novak Leadership and co-founder and former CEO of YUM! Brands Inc.

Yum! Brands, Inc., formerly known as Tricon Global Restaurants, Inc., is an American multinational fast food corporation that operates several popular brands. The company, headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, is listed on the Fortune 1000 and is one of the world’s largest fast food restaurant companies in terms of system units. Yum! Brands owns and operates the well-known fast food chains KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and The Habit Burger Grill. Notably, in China, these brands are managed by a separate company called Yum China. In the past, Yum! Brands also owned Long John Silver’s and A&W Restaurants. The company was formed as a spin-off of PepsiCo in 1997. As of 2016, Yum! Brands had an impressive network of 43,617 restaurants across 135 nations and territories worldwide. This extensive network includes 2,859 company-owned restaurants and 40,758 franchised restaurants.

The company’s journey began in 1977 when PepsiCo entered the restaurant industry by acquiring Pizza Hut from its co-founders, Dan and Frank Carney. A year later, PepsiCo made another significant move by purchasing Taco Bell from its founder, Glen Bell. In July 1986, R. J. Reynolds sold KFC to PepsiCo as a means of paying off debt incurred during its recent acquisition of Nabisco.

In 1990, PepsiCo acquired Hot ’n Now through its acquisition of Taco Bell from William Van Domelen. However, the company was later sold in 1996. In 1992, PepsiCo made a notable acquisition by purchasing California Pizza Kitchen. Later that year, in 1993, PepsiCo expanded its portfolio by acquiring Chevys Fresh Mex, D’Angelo Grilled Sandwiches, and the American division of the Canadian chain East Side Mario’s.

As PepsiCo ventured into the restaurant business, it eventually exited the industry and spun off several of its acquired chains. These chains included KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell. In 1997, PepsiCo sold its restaurant-supply unit, PepsiCo Food Systems, to Ameriserve Food Distribution Inc.
