CNA Financial Corporation, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, United States, is a prominent financial corporation. Its principal subsidiary, Continental Casualty Company (CCC), was established in 1897. CNA, the current parent company, was incorporated in 1967.
As of 2018, CNA ranks as the seventh largest commercial insurer in the United States. The company offers a comprehensive range of property and casualty insurance products and services to businesses and professionals across the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. Notably, CNA is owned by a holding company, Loews Corporation, which holds a 90% stake in the company. Loews Corporation also has diverse interests, including offshore oil and gas drilling rigs, natural gas transmission pipelines, oil and gas exploration, hotel operations, and package manufacturing.
The roots of CNA can be traced back to Continental Assurance Company of North America, founded in Detroit in 1897. Initially established to provide accident and health insurance to railroad industry employees, the company later merged with the Metropolitan Accident Company, adopting the name Continental Casualty Company. Subsequently, the company relocated to Chicago. In 1956, the National Fire Insurance Company of Hartford was acquired, and in 1963, the American Casualty Company was acquired. These acquisitions led to the formation of the acronym CNA, derived from the first letters of each of the original companies. The company has since evolved, becoming known simply as CNA.
A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
