Jack Eckerd Corporation - 1971 dated American Drug Store Chain Stock Certificate
Inv# GS6203 StockStock printed by American Bank Note Company. Eckerd Corporation was a prominent American pharmacy retail chain, originally based in Largo, Florida, and later in Warwick, Rhode Island, towards the end of its operations. At its height, Eckerd ranked as the second-largest pharmacy chain in the United States, boasting approximately 2,802 locations across 23 states, extending as far west as Arizona. For the majority of its history, Eckerd operated as an independent entity until its acquisition by JCPenney in 1996. After experiencing several years of financial difficulties and unsuccessful turnaround efforts, the chain was split in 2004, with 1,271 of its stores and its mail-order division sold to CVS, while the remaining locations were acquired by the Jean Coutu Group.
In 2007, Jean Coutu sold the chain to Rite Aid, leading to the gradual discontinuation of the Eckerd name. Eckerd was established in September 1898, making it the oldest among the "big four" drugstore chains. The founders, 27-year-old Joseph Milton Eckerd and Z. Tatom, opened their first store, the Erie Cut-Rate Medicine Store, at 1105 State Street in downtown Erie, Pennsylvania. In 1912, Eckerd and Tatom transferred ownership of their original store to Eckerd's sons and relocated to Wilmington, Delaware, where they launched a new store. From Delaware, the chain expanded into North Carolina and subsequently into Florida. Jack Eckerd, the founder's son, played a pivotal role in the company's growth by acquiring three stores in Florida in 1952.
A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
