The Orange Tornadoes and Newark Tornadoes were two manifestations of a long-lived professional American football franchise that existed in various forms from 1887 to 1941 and again from 1958 to 1970. During its first stint, the team played in the American Amateur Football Union from 1888 to 1895 and later joined the National Football League from 1929 to 1930. After a brief hiatus, the team returned to the NFL in 1936 and remained there until 1941. In 1941, the team transitioned to the American Association, where it played until 1941. From 1963 to 1964 and 1970, the team played in the Atlantic Coast Football League, and from 1965 to 1969, it joined the Continental Football League. Throughout its history, the team was primarily based in Orange, New Jersey, with several years spent in Newark. In its final five seasons, the team was known as the Orlando Panthers, based in Orlando, Florida.

In October 1930, the NFL franchise was sold back to the league. During its two years in the NFL, the team had four head coaches: Jack Depler in Orange, Jack Fish, Al McGall, and Andy Salata in Newark.
The Orange Tornadoes have a rich history that can be traced back to the Orange Athletic Club. Founded in 1887, the Orange A.C. began as an amateur football team. Their inaugural game was a 36–0 loss to the Seton Hall University football team. By the 1890s, the Orange had transformed into a semi-professional team. In 1892, they made history by practicing under electric lights at night to prepare for an October 8 game against Rutgers College. Remarkably, they emerged victorious in that game, securing a 22–10 win.

The Orange A.C.’s success continued in 1893 when they claimed the American Football Union Championship, boasting an impressive 8–2 record. In 1902, the team made a notable appearance in the National Football League, playing against the Philadelphia Phillies and the Philadelphia Athletics. They also participated in the inaugural World Series of Football, held at Madison Square Garden. Although they faced a tough loss to the All-Syracuse team in 1902, with a final score of 36–0, the Orange A.C. managed to return to the World Series of Football in 1903.

In 1903, they faced the Watertown Red & Black and the eventual champion, the Franklin Athletic Club, in the World Series. Despite their valiant efforts, they were defeated by Watertown with a score of 11–0 and by Franklin with a score of 12–0. However, they did manage to secure a 22–0 victory against the Oreo Athletic Club of Asbury Park.
