Beatrice Foods Co. was founded in 1894 in Beatrice, Nebraska, by George Everett Haskell and William W. Bosworth. Initially, the company specialized in grading butter, milk, and eggs for resale. However, they soon shifted their focus to producing their own butter under the Meadow Gold brand, which became one of the first trademarked food names in the United States. In 1913, the company relocated its headquarters to Chicago and expanded through aggressive acquisitions. This transformation led to the company evolving from a regional dairy business into a massive conglomerate. In 1946, the company officially adopted the name Beatrice Foods Co.

By the 1970s and early 1980s, Beatrice had grown into a multibillion-dollar empire. The company’s diverse portfolio included Tropicana orange juice, La Choy Chinese foods, and non-food brands like Samsonite luggage and Avis rent-a-car. The company’s historic run culminated in significant financial moves. In 1986, KKR acquired Beatrice for $6.2 billion in a leveraged buyout. Subsequently, Reginald F. Lewis acquired Beatrice’s international division for $985 million in 1987. These deals resulted in the rapid dismantling of the conglomerate. Domestic brands were sold to competitors like ConAgra and Borden, and the original corporate entity was largely dissolved by 1990.

A bond is a document of title for a loan. Bonds are issued, not only by businesses, but also by national, state or city governments, or other public bodies, or sometimes by individuals. Bonds are a loan to the company or other body. They are normally repayable within a stated period of time. Bonds earn interest at a fixed rate, which must usually be paid by the undertaking regardless of its financial results. A bondholder is a creditor of the undertaking.
