Beverly Hills Cop is a 1984 American action comedy film directed by Martin Brest, featuring a buddy cop dynamic. The screenplay was penned by Daniel Petrie Jr., with Eddie Murphy portraying Axel Foley, a savvy Detroit police officer who travels to Beverly Hills, California, to investigate the murder of his close friend. The film also includes performances by Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Ronny Cox, Lisa Eilbacher, Steven Berkoff, and Jonathan Banks in supporting roles.

As the inaugural installment of the Beverly Hills Cop series, this film catapulted Murphy to global fame, garnered the People's Choice Award for "Favorite Motion Picture," and received nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 1985. It quickly became a box office sensation, earning critical praise and grossing $234 million in the North American market, thus ranking as the highest-grossing film of 1984 in the United States.

In the film, the young and impulsive detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) finds himself in trouble after a botched undercover operation is interrupted by two uniformed officers, leading to a chaotic high-speed chase that results in significant property damage. His superior, Inspector Douglas Todd (Gilbert R. Hill), admonishes Axel for his reckless conduct and threatens termination if he does not amend his behavior. Upon returning to his apartment, Axel discovers it has been ransacked by his childhood friend, Mikey Tandino (James Russo), who, after serving time in prison, now works as a security guard in Beverly Hills, aided by a mutual acquaintance, Jenny Summers (Lisa Eilbacher). Mikey reveals some German bearer bonds to Axel, who is curious about their origin but refrains from probing further. After spending time at a bar, they return to Axel's apartment, where they are ambushed by two men, Zack (Jonathan Banks) and Casey (Michael Champion), who knock Axel out, confront Mikey regarding the bearer bonds, and subsequently murder him.
