The emergence of seaside tourism and the craze for "sea bathing" prompted the municipality of Royan, at a very early stage, to consider establishing leisure facilities. Frequented first by the Bordeaux bourgeoisie—much like its "rival," Arcachon—and later by Parisian high society, Royan thus acquired five casinos, only one of which remains standing today. Some of these establishments were considered architectural feats in their time: for instance, the "Casino Municipal"—erected in 1895 by architect Gaston Redon—remained the largest casino in France until its destruction in 1945. On a different note, the modernist Casino designed by architect Claude Ferret—destroyed in 1985—stood as one of the area's landmark monuments due to its avant-garde character.
A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
