10, 50, and 100 Pesos, P-63d, 73, and 74c. Set of 3. Mexico, officially known as the United Mexican States, is situated in the southern region of North America. It shares its northern border with the United States, while the Pacific Ocean lies to the south and west. To the southeast, it is bordered by Guatemala, Belize, and the Caribbean Sea, and to the east, it faces the Gulf of Mexico. Spanning an area of 1,972,550 square kilometers (761,610 square miles), Mexico ranks as the 13th largest country globally. With a population of approximately 126,014,024, it is the 10th most populous nation and has the highest number of Spanish speakers. The country is structured as a federation consisting of 31 states and Mexico City, which serves as its capital and largest city. Other significant urban centers include Guadalajara, Monterrey, Puebla, Toluca, Tijuana, Ciudad Juárez, and León. The history of pre-Columbian Mexico dates back to 8,000 BCE and is recognized as one of the six cradles of civilization that emerged in Mesoamerica, particularly through the Olmec, Maya, and Aztec civilizations, the latter of which was prominent in the century preceding European contact. Between 1519 and 1521, Hernán Cortés, along with numerous indigenous allies, successfully conquered the Aztec Empire. He established Mexico City on the remnants of the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan, thereby founding the Kingdom of New Spain within the Spanish Empire. The Catholic Church, supported by the Spanish monarchy, initiated efforts to convert the indigenous populations to Christianity, a process referred to as the "spiritual conquest of Mexico."
