On March 16, 1932, the Iraqi government first introduced banknotes in denominations of 1/4, 1/2, 1, 5, 10, and 100 dinars. These notes were printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. in the United Kingdom and initially issued by the Iraqi currency board. They could be exchanged for pound sterling until 1947. After that, the National Bank of Iraq took over the issuance until 1954, when the Central Bank of Iraq took over. Production of 100 dinar notes stopped in the 1940s, but other denominations stayed in use until 1978, when 25 dinar notes were introduced. In 1991, 50 dinar notes were added, and then the 100 dinar notes were brought back. In 1995, 250 dinar notes were introduced, and by 2002, a 10,000 dinar note was released.

From 1990 to October 2003, Iraqi banknotes, along with the 25-dinar note from 1986, had a picture of former President Saddam Hussein on them. But after the 1991 Gulf War, currency production moved to local and Chinese printers. The notes were made from wood pulp paper instead of the usual cotton or linen. They had poor-quality printing, and some were even printed using newspaper presses. This shows how bad the quality of currency production was during that time.
