Costa Rica - 50 Costa Rican Colones - P-239 - 1974 dated Foreign Paper Money - Very Close to C.U. Condition
Inv# FM3496 Foreign Paper MoneyA.U. plus condition. 50 Colones, P-239. Front and back shown. The colón serves as the official currency of Costa Rica. Its name is derived from Christopher Columbus, referred to as Cristóbal Colón in Spanish. Each colón is subdivided into one hundred céntimos. The colón was first introduced in 1896, replacing the peso at an equal value. Although the colón is typically divided into 100 centimos, there was a period from 1917 to 1919 when coins were issued under the name centavo for the 1/100 subunit of the colón. In the early twentieth century, various banks issued colones; however, since 1951, the Central Bank of Costa Rica has been the sole producer of this currency. From 2006 to 2015, the colón was subject to a crawling peg against the United States dollar, but it has since been allowed to float within a range established by the Costa Rican central bank.
