5 Dollars, P-106. Sir Wilfrid Laurier Prime Minister on back. Polymer and Hologram! Sir Henri Charles Wilfrid Laurier (November 20, 1841 – February 17, 1919) was a distinguished Canadian lawyer, statesman, and politician who served as the seventh Prime Minister of Canada from 1896 to 1911. As the first French Canadian prime minister, Laurier's 15-year term remains the longest continuous premiership in Canadian history, and his nearly 45 years in the House of Commons is a record for the institution. He is renowned for his ability to navigate and reconcile the interests of both English and French Canada.

Laurier studied law at McGill University and began his legal practice before entering politics. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec in 1871 and to the House of Commons in 1874. Gaining significant support among French Canadians and the Québécois, Laurier became known for his oratory skills. After serving as Minister of Inland Revenue under Prime Minister Alexander Mackenzie from 1877 to 1878, he became the leader of the Liberal Party in 1887, assuming the role of leader of the Official Opposition. Although he lost the 1891 federal election to John A. Macdonald's Conservatives, Laurier capitalized on the controversy surrounding the Conservative government's handling of the Manitoba Schools Question—a dispute over funding for Catholic schools—to secure victory in the 1896 federal election. He led the Liberal Party to three more electoral victories during his leadership. Read more at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilfrid_Laurier
