The French franc was in circulation alongside unique banknotes starting in 1903 and coins introduced in 1944. It was ultimately supplanted by the CFA franc in 1945. The Banque de l'Afrique Occidentale commenced the issuance of banknotes in 1903, beginning with 100 franc notes that year, followed by the introduction of 5 franc notes in 1904, 500 franc notes in 1912, 25 franc notes in 1917, 1000 franc notes in 1919, and 50 franc notes in 1920. Additionally, 10 franc notes were introduced in 1943. In 1944, the government released notes for 50 centimes, as well as 1 and 2 franc denominations. The banknotes from the Banque de l'Afrique Occidentale continued to be in circulation even after the CFA franc was introduced.
