On March 16, 1932, the Iraqi government issued its first banknotes in denominations of 1/4, 1/2, 1, 5, 10, and 100 dinars. Printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. in the UK, these notes were initially convertible into pound sterling until 1947. The National Bank of Iraq took over issuance until 1954, when the Central Bank of Iraq assumed responsibility. Production of 100 dinar notes ceased in the 1940s, but other denominations remained in use until 1978, when 25 dinar notes were introduced. 50 dinar notes followed in 1991, and 100 dinar notes were reissued. 250 dinar notes were introduced in 1995, and a 10,000 dinar note was released in 2002.
From 1990 to October 2003, Iraqi banknotes, along with the 1986 25-dinar note, featured an idealized engraving of former President Saddam Hussein. After the 1991 Gulf War, currency production shifted to local and Chinese printers, resulting in poor quality notes made from wood pulp paper instead of cotton or linen. The notes had substandard lithography, and some were even printed using newspaper presses, reflecting the degraded quality during that period.
